Although it may seem very obvious, the best advice for players starting out at an online poker room, or to those who already have some poker experience but want to start playing a new and different variation of poker, is to get to know the rules.
Never sit down at a table in a cash game if you feel even a little unsure of how the game plays out. The chances are that the other players at the table are going to know what they’re doing and if they sniff out that you don’t then you could be in for a nasty surprise. Do as much research as you can on the type of poker you are going to play because, whilst they may all be card games, some of them differ greatly in structure and style.
Some online casinos offer free to play options, and these are great for when you have read a few rules but still feel like you don’t have to confidence to put real money down on the table. Many people believe that the only way to truly get a thorough feel for the game is to get stuck in and play it, so if there is a free to play option, it’s probably best to give that a shot before playing for cash.
On the other hand, it’s not a good idea to use a free to play option and suddenly think that because you now have a fair bit of experience playing the game, you should start at high stakes. Playing for money will always feel different to playing for free because there is a risk involved. A lot of casinos have tables with low stakes like $0.05 / $0.10. These are good places to start while you are still working out your strategy and getting a good feel for the game. That way the risk of losing a lot of money in the process decreases dramatically. It’s also best to stick to fixed limit tables as sometimes no limit games and pot limit games can get incredibly expensive.
A successful player will always try to learn their opponent’s strategy too. This is really something that can only come with practise and experience. The more often you play against real players, the easier you will find it to be able to read their moves. Of course this also means that your opponents will also find it easier to read you. The only way to avoid this is to change your style of play frequently enough to stop other players being able to predict how you will act next.
Finally, the best way to make big money from poker is not to expect it to happen overnight. Poker is an unpredictable game and to counter this you need a good sound strategy to get you through. Although not playing hands may be frustrating when you first start out at poker, it really doesn’t make sense to waste your money on a hand that is very unlikely to win. Money saved in poker can be just as valuable as money won. In short, poker is a game that allows players to reap massive rewards, but these rewards usually only come with experience to a patient and well disciplined player.
