Types of Poker Players

Poker players come in lots of different shapes and sizes, and a lot of them have different ways they like to play. When you’re first starting out at poker it’s probably best to get a good idea of the different types of opponent you may come across in order to be able to judge how they will play against you.

Tight Players

Tight players are those who understand what a good pre-flow hand is and so you will find they fold a lot and won’t see the flop. Once on the flop, this is probably a player who has a good strong hand as these are the only hands they prefer to play. You may find they never call except for an open ended straight or flush draw. Being a tight player is a good image to have at the poker table sometimes, although it does mean that you have to hold a lot of your cards if you want to win.

Loose-Aggressive Players

This kind of player will raise a good deal of hands pre-flop and will bet almost every flop. They tend to win through sheer intimidation as they take down pots when no one is brave enough to call them down. This kind of player is completely unpredictable and it’s hard to defence against them. They are unreadable, and if you observe their behaviour and guess wrong then it could go badly.

Novices

It can be bad to be a new player, the more experienced players will

take advantage of you in an attempt to make as much money from your lack of knowledge about the game. But being new can also be an advantage in that other players at the table don’t know very much about you and could find it hard to predict how you will react. The main goal for a novice is simply to observe how the game pans out. They will be very attentive in order to learn how to read hands and they may avoid calling repeatedly.

Solid Experienced Players

The most experienced kind of players will usually stick to a tight aggressive style. Some of these players make a living from their game so they know what they’re doing. You don’t really want to come up against one of these players if you’re just starting out but a lot of them stick to higher stakes and bigger limits. The trouble with these kinds of players is that they will adjust their game to the situation, so you may not be able to predict how they will play next.
