Learn Oxford Stud Poker Rules

Although this game is called “Oxford Stud”, it’s really more of a mix between a Stud game of poker and a Community Card game of poker. It’s because of this hybrid between Stud and Community Card style poker that Oxford Stud gets its reputation for being able to drive even the best poker players crazy! Not only that, but this game is often played with a high-low split of the pot too. It’s extremely difficult in Oxford Stud to be able to determine what position actually gives you an advantage.

The game starts in a similar way to Seven Card Stud Poker. Each player is dealt three cards. Two are face down and known as ‘hole cards’ and one is face up and known as the ‘face card’. The player who has the lowest face-card will then start the betting in a clockwise direction.

When the first round of betting concludes, two community cards are dealt onto the table.
A second round of betting will then begin, starting with the person who has the highest showing poker hand made up by his face card and the two community cards.

When this second round of betting is over, each player is then dealt another face card.
A third round of betting then begins. Again, the betting starts with the player who has the best partial poker hand. This will be made up of four cards this time – two community cards and two face cards.
A third community card is then dealt and a final round of betting begins.

As before, the player with the best showing poker hand will start the betting. But remember, because there are now three community cards out there and each player has two face cards, this poker hand will be made up of 5 cards. This means that straights and flushes are also considered when decided which of the hands are higher.

The final round of betting begins and is followed by the showdown. All the players reveal their cards and the player with the highest hand wins. Unless you are playing the Hi-Lo variation in which case the pot is split between the highest and lowest hand.
