Learn 5 Card Draw Poker Rules

Five Card Draw poker may be rare in casino play and amongst tournaments, but it’s usually the first style of poker learned by most poker players. Even the professional players have grown up playing Five Card Draw poker around the kitchen table. The game is perfect for inexperienced players wanting to get a better understanding of the game of poker because the rules are so simple. From there on it’s easier to learn how to play some of the more complicated variants of the game. Although the game is simple, don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s easy to win. To master a game like Five Card Draw poker, you’re going to need to know a few basics;

If at the end of the game, two players have the same type of hand then it will be the player who has the cards with a higher face value that comes out on top.

To start with, each player will place their ante into the pot and the dealer will give each player five cards face down. These are known as Hole cards; the players will pick them up and try to keep them concealed from their opponents.

The player left of the dealer will then begin a round of betting by deciding whether to call the bet (match the previous players), raise (bet higher than the previous player), or fold (resign from the game). Betting then continues clockwise.

Once the betting is over, the remaining players have the option to exchange some of their cards for an equal number of cards from the top of the deck. However many cards they are allowed to exchange depends on the house rules of the casino, but typically it is up to three cards.

Once every player has had a chance to discard some of their cards in exchange for news ones, another round of betting begins.

Finally the remaining players reveal their hands and whoever has the best poker hand wins the round and the pot!
