Poker Hands

learn texas hold'em rules

Texas Hold’ em is probably the most popular form of poker in the world right now. This version of poker, Casino Hold ‘Em, has three different possible payouts. These are the Ante, Bonus and Call bet payouts.

Casino Hold ‘Em is played using a 52-card deck with the Jokers removed. You will compete against the dealer rather than against other players.

The game starts with the player placing an Ante bet. Once the Ante bet is placed, the player can place a Bonus bet if he/she so wishes – but remember, players cannot place a Bonus bet without placing the Ante bet first!

Once bets have been placed, the dealing begins. Two cards are dealt face down to both the player as well as the dealer. These are known as ‘Hole cards’.

The Player’s Hole cards are then exposed and the Dealer will discard the top card from the deck of cards. This discarded card is known as a ‘Burn Card’.

The dealer will then deal the next 3 cards face up onto the table. This is known as the ‘Flop’.

Once the Flop is dealt, players then have the option to either Fold or Call. If a player Folds, then they will lose all their bets and the game ends. If a player chooses to Call, then a Call bet which is 2x the Ante bet is placed.

The dealer will then burn another card and deal a single card face up onto the table. This card is known as the ‘Turn card’.

After the Turn card, the dealer burns one final card and deals the last card onto the table. This is known as a ‘River’.
The five face up dealt cards are community cards that either the player or dealer can use to form a five-card poker hand in combination with their Hole cards.

The dealer’s Hole cards are now exposed and your hand is then compared to that of the dealer.

  • If the dealer’s hand does not qualify with a pair of fours or better, your Call bet is returned to you, and your Ante bet is paid out
  • If the dealer has a better hand than you, then you lose both Call and Ante bets
  • If you and the dealer have the same hand, both your Call and Ante bets are returned to you (a Push)
  • If you beat the dealer, your Call bet pays even money, and your Ante bet is paid out according to the Ante Pay Table below

Whichever online poker room you are playing in will select automatically the best 5 card poker hand available to you from the community cards and your Hole card. Winnings are calculated based on the following rules for each type of bet placed;

- Ante Bet: Players hand is formed by using their hole cards in combination with the community cards. At least one of the player’s Hole cards must be used in this combination. The winnings are based on the Ante paytable.
- Call Bet: At least one of the players Hole cards must be used to form a winning hand.
- Bonus bet: Poker hand for the bonus bet is calculated based on the Flop. Payouts are based on the Bonus paytable.
