Basic Poker strategy
In a game of Caribbean Stud, you’re playing against the dealer and not the other players. This means there is little point in bluffing, especially as the house has a 5.2% edge against a player anyway. So you’re going to have to work out a strategy in order to help you get the most out of the game.
The most important thing you can possibly learn in a game of poker, especially in Caribbean Stud, is when to fold. And there are four things that you should probably consider when making the decision of whether to carry on or not,
- If you choose to fold, you will not get your ante back. The ante is given to the casino bank.
- If you decide to raise and stay in the game, you will gain winnings on the ante bet if the dealer doesn’t qualify. But not on the second bet, the second bet will be returned.
- If the dealer does have a qualifying hand, you can win the ante bet and the raise you are offered.
- If you raise, but you don’t have the higher hand, you’re going to lose both bets.
It’s fairly simple to know the right time to raise or not. If you have a Royal Flush or a Straight, then there is a pretty good chance that you could beat the dealer so you should raise. If you had a Pair of twos, then you’d probably want to fold because there is a higher chance of the dealer having a better hand than you. Whether to play Pairs is always a tricky decision, but a high Pair is always more valuable than a low one. You should play a Pair of aces even though it’s still possible for the dealer to have a better hand.
Remember to use the dealer’s up-card in order to help you make your decisions. But don’t rely on it, just use your knowledge of hand values from games of Texas Hold ‘Em and Omaha and other popular poker variations in order to make the best decision about your game play.
