5 Card Draw Poker Strategy

Five Card Draw Poker is a game that gives you very little information about the strength of your opponent’s hands. This means that in order to master the game, you need to have a good strong strategy on your side in able to make the most amount of money alongside your rakeback.

As in other variations of poker, your position around the table can have an influence on the decisions that you make. There is an advantage to being the last player in the betting rounds. You can gather information about your opponent’s hands judging by the way they play. For example, if your opponent chose to draw only 1 card, it might suggest that they have 2 pairs in their hand. This means that you can make a more informed choice when deciding whether or not to continue play.

The best way to make money out of 5 Card Draw Poker is to know the right time to fold and the right time to raise. Of course, with so many ‘face down’ cards, a lot of your strategy is going to rely on reading the actions of your opponents. Here are some hints to help you try and suss out their cards;

- If a player bets the absolute minimum required to stay in a hand, or calls, or simply makes a small bet and then follows this by drawing 3 cards it indicates they have a pair.
- If a player bets the minimum and then draws 2 it indicates they have a pair with an unpaired ace or king.
- If a player bets the minimum but then draws 1, it suggests that they have a small 2 pair hand or a draw to a flush or straight.
- If they raise and then draw 3 they probably have aces or kings.
- If they raise then draw 2, they may have aces or kings with a good kicker
- If they raise then draw 1, it’s a sign they have 2 pairs
- A small bet then stands pat (stick with their original hand) is a sign they have a straight or better
- A check from blinds then draws 1 could be a straight or flush draw.

If you can remember which cards were played and take notes on individual players, then it can often help your game. If you can get to know your opponents, you’ll be able to better understand when they might be bluffing.

It’s very common in 5 Card Draw for players to only draw 1 card when holding a three of a king because other players will think they have 2 small pairs. You may also find some players like to stand pat as a bluff in order to convince other players they have a straight or better, if you notice someone standing pat frequently – they could be a habitual bluffer!
