In the first day of one of the most interesting events on the poker tour 11 of the 17 shooting stars had fallen and were left kicking their feet at the rail. Only Daniel Negreanu, Greg Mueller, Steve Brecher, Mike Matusow, Freddy Deeb and Yevgeniy Timoshenko will be competing in Day 2 alongside 47 other players.

Vanna Tea picked up the $10,000 chip leader award finishing the day with 143,900 slightly ahead of table mate Greg Mueller who finished on 132,800. On a particularly hard table featuring Tom Dwan, Scott Montgomery and Chrstina Lindley Tea was able to not only survive but dominat and watched on as Dwan was sent packing.

Other shooting stars to have left the tournament after the first day include: Gus Hansen, T J Cloutier, Kathy Liebert, Eric Baldwon and Jennifer Harman. A short stacked Chris “Jesus” Ferguson was the last to leave as he saw his 66s defeated on the river by the board hitting its own two pair leaving Phat Nguyen to win the pot with his king kicker.

Day 1b has finished with 16 shooting stars eliminated; their legacy an autographed t-shirt and $5,000 to the lucky eliminator. Amongst those to go were NBC Heads Up Champ Annie Duke, Todd Brunson, Allen Cunningham, Antonio Esfandiari, Joe Hachem, Eric Seidel and David Williams.

Eugene Katchalov finished day 1b as the chip leader and took home a very welcome bonus of $10,000.

All the surviving players from Days 1a and 1b will now compete today in Day 2 to position themselves for the end game. With lots of bounties still available the action is likely to be red hot.

In a huge weekend for high stakes online poker, Dwan and Isildur1 pocketed a combined $1.4m taking some huge pots from Patrik Antonius amongst others. Dwan finished the weekend up $850,000 whilst Isildur1 enjoyed the positive side of half a million nestling in his account.

Most of the action was on the Pot Limit Omaha tables with players such as Cole South, LarsLuzak, Triko all losing heavily to the terrible two. Antonius was left with the most to bear having finished the weekend poorer for over $960,000 to take his 2010 losses up to $2.8 million.

Isildur1 claimed a huge pot from Ilari “Zigmund” Sahamies when his double suited AQQJ found a King on the river in PLO to win the unknown Swedish sensation $256,282 and leave Sahamies staring at his screen. Sahamies did pick up a large pot against Dwan and Gus Hansen as his double suited 2356 picked up two pair and over $240,000.

The high stakes action has been fast and furious of late with Dwan and Isildur1 competing at the highest level and the likes of Sahamies and Antonius putting some deep stacks on the line as well.

PokerStars are offering one lucky Australian the chance to land their dream job as a a sponsored PokerStars player. With A$40,000 up for grabs in tournament entry fees and a cosy salary of A$5,000 a month the winner will be smiling from the other side of A$100,000.

To have a shot at the A$100,000 and PokerStars sponsorship Australian players need to be registered at PokerStars and enter one of the Freeroll qualifiers taking place between March 1st and March 25th. On Fridays of each week PokerStars will hold a weekly final before the winners of these all face up on Saturday March 27th at 20.30 AEDT.

Ten potential Dream Job winners will then have six weeks to prove they have what it takes to be sponsored by PokerStars by tweeting and Facebooking their travels and interviews with Team PokerStars Australia. In a true test of their poker knowledge the 10 finalists will also have to complete a short test on what they know in the poker world.

The winner will be decided by the Australian poker community who will be able to vote for their favourite individual on the PokerStars website. Only Australians with PokerStars will be able to show their support so expect friends and families of finalists to be signing up pretty sharpish after the Top 10 have been announced.

Sportsmen from all disciplines have often turned to gambling in a move which for some is simply a distraction from their high profile careers or for some another source of valuable income. Whilst there are stories of footballers blowing a four bedroom house on a horse race another sport has specialised in producing winners on the poker table.

Cricket players appear to hold an edge over many other types of sportsmen due to the intensity of their sport and the similarities between the disciplines of poker and England’s oft-derided export. For example, Shane Warne, once the world’s most talented and volatile spin bowler is now an ambassador for 888 having signed for the company in January 2008 only months after dismantling the England cricket team.

Warney himself has been an exception to almost every rule and has lived the life of a high stakes player even before he started fingering chips in live tournaments. His ability to outwit opposition batsmen and claim vital wickets coupled with his love for the game and indomitable spirit made him as loved in Australia as he was feared in other countries.

Even for mere mortals of the cricketing world poker has held a strong attraction. Batsmen in cricket know they have one chance and one chance only – much like in a poker tournament. One slip and the wickets go tumbling or the chips slide across to a smiling opponent. The celebrations may be more muted in poker but the feeling of victory remains the same. Batsmen are also known for trying to disrupt a bowler’s rhythm much as a poker player will change up to ensure players are always off balance. Spin bowlers spend their whole time trying to trick, confuse and confound the batsmen into a mistake.

The similarities have ensured a strong crossover between the sports and with England toiling in Bangladesh at the moment their thoughts may be far away from the Ashes at the end of the year but for those who watched the Poker Ashes in 2009 the build up has already begun.
